Anticipations and Expectations

A. What are the five things that you are most looking forward to about studying abroad?

1. Learning the language fluently!! Español bebe!

2. To have time to enjoy the intimacies of life in a culture other than my own

3. To grow as an individual--in my beliefs (faith and self)---in my strengths---in my passions
(music/soccer/dance/language)--in my weaknesses (how I cope in challenging situations)

4. Meeting new people and bonding with them while speaking another language

5. Living in such a lively and friendly culture!

B. What are the five things that currently worry you most about going overseas?

1. Not being the person I am in English--I love doing voices and accents (part of my personality) and I feel like part of myself will be thwarted a bit
With that said, I believe my whole self will come out in Spanish over time-- I just have to be patient.

2.  What it will be like to be in high school again after I already graduated high school in the U.S.

3. How I will deal with the big drinking culture in Ecuador

4. If I will find a strong church community to be apart of (youth group in Portland has been such a sanctuary for me)

C. What are the five things (people, places, activities, etc.) you believe you will miss most from home when abroad?

1. My awesome family and friends--their presence and their comforting words
-family reunions at Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter
-pick-up soccer games with my buds
-having jam sessions and creating music with Naomi

2. Youth group and my church!

3. My piano/my home comforts

4. Beautiful Portland Oregon and its quirkiness

5. American humor

D. What are the five things (people, places, activities, etc.) you believe you will miss least from home when abroad?

1. Having to decide what to wear to school (uniforms all the way!)

2. The pathetic dancing that goes on at high school dances

3. American football love

4. The stress of grades truly counting and being sleep deprived over it (taking a gap year :) )

E. My greatest single challenge overseas:

I believe that my greatest single challenge will be to stay strong in my morals and beliefs while being in a totally different atmosphere----I will be challenged mentally.  With that, there will be the challenge of understanding everything in Spanish at first---in school, in church, and at home. I know it will take time to understand everything but I'm so excited to sit down with my host family at the end of the year and talk about everything and anything. I'm excited to crack jokes in Spanish. I'm excited to go into science class and understand everything in Spanish. It will be truly awesome.
